This Soviet propaganda newsreel recounts the story of the Soviet Revolution and the subsequent civil war between the Red Army and White Army. It shows crucial events in St. Petersburg and the fight for control of Kiev and Moscow.
Narrator: October 25, 1917. The Socialist Revolution won in Petrograd. The triumphant march of the revolution began in the country. Smolny remained the military headquarters of the revolution. The Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party was situated here. Lenin worked here. (00.50) The Soviet government won peacefully in many cities, there was no fighting. Bolsheviks were always ahead, they led the fight for the power of Soviets. The proletarian Urals were an important center of the revolution. Workers responded to the Bolshevik’s appeal to gain control locally. (01.21) In trenches, dugouts, and hospitals, they were reading the Bolshevik’s appeal to the frontline soldiers. The army sided with the Soviets. But capitalists and landowners were fighting against the Soviet powers in many places. It happened in Moscow. The blood was being spilled on the streets of the city for five days. For five days, workers and soldiers of Moscow were fighting at the barricades under the guidance of the Bolshevik Party. (02.05) The armored riot succeeded in Moscow. Moscow streets preserved the signs of fierce fighting for many days. In Kiev, revolutionary workers were fighting for 11 days for the Soviet government. 1,500 workers perished in that fight by the hands of Ukrainian White Guards. But they did not die for nothing. Ukraine became Soviet. (03.07) In spring of 1918, the Soviet government was established in proletarian Baku, in the Middle East. The Revolution kept moving further and further. Vladivostok became Soviet. The Revolution marched triumphantly from one end of the great country to another, and by the spring of 1918, the Soviet flag was soaring over all of Russia.
